13 Most Disappointing Video Games Of 2014

11. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

In fairness, expecting greatness out of any game in the improbably popular Final Fantasy XIII series is a mistake in of itself. Even ignoring a startlingly goofy end-of-the-world premise, the litany of quests you're forced to rush through as Lightning is rudimentary RPG 101 fare, and the time limit gimmick isn't so much exciting as it is frustrating and irritating. Though credit must be given to Square Enix for once again honing the series' battle system and arguably delivering the most satisfying fights of the entire franchise, this counts for little when everything else outside of it is so frustrating. As is de rigeur for the FFXIII games, the plot makes little sense, the characters are annoying, and you'll likely find yourself glazed over during many of the game's overly verbose, overwrought dialogues. While Lightning Returns could have redeemed a disappointing departure for the series, it's instead a mostly dull reminder of why the franchise has been stuck in first gear for the last 5 years.
