13 Hidden Gaming Gems Of 2014 You Need To Play

3. The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter

Switching gears back to the Sherlockian-style murder mystery fare, developer The Astronauts' first foray into game design is a very memorable one. Putting you in the shoes of supernatural detective-for-hire Paul Prospero (a great name for this sort of thing) you'll be getting stuck into the absolutely stunning Red Creek Valley, a fictional Alan Wake-styled town that's comprised of a huge amount of real world photography and data capture, making for a slow-burn tale that refuses to hold your hand, instead forcing you to pick apart every layer of the surrounding world. You'll get a slight bit of forward-prodding thanks to Prospero's otherworldy gifts that allow him to see recreations of crime scenes, along with locating objects that are hinted at in initial investigations - but it's always up to you to do the real legwork. Unlike Murdered: Soul Suspect the story here is utterly fantastic, and the paranormal aspects of the world don't overshadow some very mature themes or presentation.
