13 More Horror Themed Video Games To Play On Halloween
2. Resident Evil

How could we write up a list of the best horror video games and not include Resident Evil? Fans can argue to their deaths which video game was the first in the survival horror genre but none can deny that Resident Evil set the standards since its inception. The games have since evolved beyond the horror genre but have remained a staple and nothing screams Halloween like a Resident Evil gaming marathon.
Debuting in 1996, Resident Evil unleashed its plague among the population infecting gamers faster than the T-Virus. Whereas previous games dipped their toes into horror they lacked the capabilities to truly make a game scary. Resident Evil changed this the moment we saw our first zombie munching on the flesh of a fallen comrade. Zombies aren't all you'll come across, however. With a story revolving around genetic and viral experiments you'll have to face giant spiders, snakes, and even a shark.
No game in the series incorporates a creepier feel than the first. Exploring an old, desolate mansion filled with zombies and experiments gone wrong is perfect for Halloween. Sequels Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis take place shortly after and throw you in the middle of a zombie outbreak. Nemesis introduced the eponymous tyrant who pursues protagonist Jill Valentine as it attempts to destroy every survivor from the first game.
Many tend to favor Resident Evil 4 for its turn toward the action genre as well as its improved controls and gameplay mechanics. Sticking with the Halloween spirit, RE4 sees protagonist Leon Kennedy explore old villages and a large, creepy castle as he attempts to rescue the president's daughter from a cult. Beginning with Resident Evil 5 the games began to stray from the spooky environments and horror themes to focus more on action. To stay in the Halloween mood go for the REmake and Resident Evil 4 both for GameCube though you'll do well with any entry in the franchise.
