When a car accident lands Simon Jarrett in hospital, he agrees to undergo an experimental brain scan that causes him to black out. When he awakens, he's in an underwater research facility in the distant future - with the reason why serving as the swirling central mystery for the player to unfold.
SOMA itself is built on a pervasive sense of dread, using atmosphere as a weapon to make players endlessly uneasy as they traverse the bleak halls of PATHOS-II. Surrounded by mutants and robots intent on wiping Jarrett out, players must find the safest way to understanding what's going on, and keep their sanity in the process.
It's no surprise that the title comes from Frictional Games, previously responsible for the Penumbra and Amnesia series before honing all their talent in on this sci-fi tale of woe.
