13 Most Anticipated 2021 Video Games Ranked - Did They Live Up To The Hype?

1. Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2
Double Fine

While journalistic integrity/WhatCulture's whip-happy editors prevent me from simply copy-pasting the conclusion of the previous entry, the same sentiment applies here. Psychonauts 2 is a superb, long-awaited sequel that fixes the flaws of the original game while doubling down on what made it special.

Psychonauts 2 sees its diminutive cover-star Raz explore the mental landscapes of friend and foe alike, and the results are never less than eye-openingly original. Whether tasking you to rearrange a teacher's thought bubbles to cure them of their gambling addiction or sail through a sea of alcohol to mend a broken heart, Psychonauts 2's worlds feel like they belong in a museum for future game designers to study and learn from.

Even more impressive is the game's commitment to empathy. Look back at the previous paragraph and you'll see that you are helping the people whose minds you're wandering around in. Psychonauts 2 takes mental health seriously, and despite its zany humour and far-out premise, the game never forgets to treat even its most nefarious characters with compassion.

Exquisitely designed, endlessly inventive and filled with more heart than a redeemed Grinch, Psychonauts 2 fully deserves its place at the top of this list.
