In early November, Square Enix made the puzzling decision to hold a special livestream with the promise of exciting news about Final Fantasy XV. As it turned out, they went on to announce that three of the four planned FFXV DLCs due for release in 2019 had been cancelled.

To make matters worse, the company delivered a one-two punch to fans by adding that FFXV director Hajime Tabata, who took over development in 2014 and is widely credited with "fixing" the game, had left the company.

Though the announcement was framed as Tabata resigning to pursue other endeavours, the common sentiment among fans is that he was edged out, given that he was only appointed as head of Luminous Productions back in March.

Tabata's landed on his feet at least, launching a new studio, JP Games. As for Square Enix, these announcements and their tone-deaf messaging style suggest a publisher in something of a management crisis (as if that wasn't clear already).
