8. Pyre

Supergiant Games' third title to date, following Bastion and Transistor, is a major leap in scale for the developer, an initially linear RPG that eventually unfolds to become by far their most ambitious and nuanced game to date.

Pyre is a peculiar and entrancing mix of RPG and sports game, a world-hopping adventure that revolves around various rugby-like battles called Rites, where the player's party attempts to whittle down their opponents' HP by throwing an orb into their pyre (essentially their goal).

This game is without doubt one of the best-looking releases of 2017, with its eye-wateringly beautiful art style and slick presentation. That it's also got charming characters, a witty script and an addictive, unique central gimmick is all just the icing on the cake, really.
