13. Shepard Was Controlled By The Protheans - Mass Effect Trilogy

Back in 2012, we were looking for any excuse to get as far away as possible from how ME3 wrapped up, but go even further back, and the whole trilogy can be flipped on its head.

See, many conversations you have with various aliens who've been indoctrinated in original game describe hearing subtle whispering, alongside a 'scraping' sound as it happened; which just happens to be the exact same sound effects present during Shepard's first interaction with the Prothean beacon on Eden Prime.

Honestly, it did always seem a BIT suspect that Shepard goes from being some forthright, militaristic individual, straight to "That's what I saw, definitely, it was the extinction of a race, I'm sure!" within about half an hour. There's also the fact that we, roleplaying the Commander , also saw this exact same vision and it looked like nothing of the sort, more just a concoction of images fired into Shepard's mind - almost like subliminal messaging... or indoctrination.

If you take this and run with it, the events of the trilogy are but the whims of two interstellar races vying for control of the galaxy with you as their conduit - making Starchild's ominous "You only have three options" ending make perfect sense.
