From child-friendly to parent-scaring, The Last of Us 2's latest trailer was one of the first in a long time to get the general gaming press talking about its depiction of violence. Showing a burly female figure up against a gang of quasi-religious fanatics, the beauty of the footage was that it didn't tie into The Last of Us at all - until the very end.

With a closing shot of an army of Clickers running towards this character, we can surmise - given she's the centre of attention - that this is Ellie's mother. Not only does this directly affect Joel's surrogate father relationship with Ellie, but what if this incredibly tough individual finds out the truth about what happened in the first game?

The only logical place to take Joel and Ellie as characters is to put a strain on their relationship and amplify Joel's lie until it crosses over into all sorts of real-world machinations.

This seems to be the direction Naughty Dog are going, and we'll find out either later in 2018, or next year.
