Though it might seem a tad ridiculous to get excited about a tennis game, there exists a lineage of tennis video games across the late 90s and 2000s that were damn fun. Mario Tennis was one of these, with a perfectly playable set of mechanics and animations that positively encouraged, "Oh go on, just one more game" mentalities.

For Aces we're seeing Nintendo apply a series of more advanced moves and techniques, ranging from time-slowing to drop-shots, last minute returns to signature slam attacks. There'll be online modes where you can only use these fancier moves, and others where a good friendly rally is favoured instead.

Either way, Mario Tennis Aces is set to be another perfectly refined gamer's game - one with enough charm, character and depth to sit right alongside Mario Kart and Splatoon.
