2. DOOMguy Fires Himself Out A Cannon To Punch Through Mars - DOOM Eternal

There's a tone to the newer DOOM games all its own. ID Software have created something that's self-aware, experimental, gory and over the top, but knows when to take itself seriously so you understand the scale of what's unfolding.

It largely boils down to framing DOOMguy as an individual as endlessly powerful and remorseless as the meme'd version we post about online. Eternal is stuffed full of examples where pompous characters monologue about purpose and "breaking the rules!", only for DOOMguy to !*$% a shotgun in their general direction, or walk off before they're finished.

It culminates when a portal to Hell is discovered inside Mars, and - without speaking - DOOMguy starts loading himself into a city-sized space cannon, to blast directly into the fray.

As characters on his comms give us "He can't be serious" remarks, the DOOM marine takes off at what must be near lightspeed, smashing through an enemy facility's roof and dusting himself off like it was nothing.

Transitioning immediately back to gameplay as Mick Gordon's score roars back into life, THIS is why DOOM Eternal is one of the best games of 2020.
