15 Bold Gaming Predictions For 2018

4. PSVR's Momentum Begins To Slow

The Prediction: After an impressive 2017 saw PSVR release a surprising number of quality AAA games and terrific indies, 2018 will see Sony's enthusiasm for the tech waver, and its market share will begin to dwindle.

Why It Will Happen: There are a few things to consider here. The year's first big PSVR game, The Inpatient, was a colossal disappointment, the much-hyped upcoming adventure game Moss has been confirmed to clock in at just three hours, Bravo Team doesn't look that great, and beyond that, there aren't many big AAA VR experiences that seem all that interesting.

Elsewhere, the limitations of the tech are going to start chipping away at players craving more sophisticated experiences, which combined with the fast-lowering price tags of the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift will probably put a dent in PSVR's huge market dominance.

Also, if Sony does decide to pull the trigger on a 2019 PS5 release, we'll probably start hearing word about a PSVR 2.0, which might shift game development away from the original headset.

Why It Might Not: In fairness, this time last year PSVR's 2017 lineup wasn't looking all that grand, but things picked up a lot after Q1. With the tendency for PSVR games to be released pretty much out of nowhere, don't be surprised if some quality gems are announced at a moment's notice.
