15 BRUTALLY Hard Video Games (That Are Actually Fun)
4. Hotline Miami
Hotline Miami is unashamedly violent and does nothing to justify or apologise for its carnage. The top-down shooter allows for complete flexibility in the ways you can dispatch enemies. Levels are littered with melee weapons like lead pipes and pool cues, a range of firearms and incredibly sturdy doors. The thing to remember is, for all the options at your fingertips, your enemies are as equally armed to the teeth.
Each stage has a whole host of enemies to dispatch of, and all of them can kill you instantly. There is little opportunity to luck your way through the level, as each misplaced bullet or mistimed entrance could alert a shotgun-wielding goon to blowing your face off. Thankfully, Hotline Miami knows that you will die. Lots.
Load times are almost instant, allowing for a swift return to the action. After 10 to 15 attempts at a stage, the patterns of the guard dogs and enemies start to become more and more predictable. This amalgamates into a perfect run that sees you unlocking your inner John Wick by meticulously cutting down enemies without taking a scratch.
