15 BRUTALLY Hard Video Games (That Are Actually Fun)
3. Session
It has been 10 long years since we have been gifted with a truly great skating game. Skate 3, though not the best in the series, tied together snappy controls with a wicked aesthetic and a glorious soundtrack. In 2019, though still in early-access, Session is here to take the mantle. But Session is more than a carbon copy of EA's long-forgotten franchise. Session re-invents how to play video games altogether.
Session takes the simulation aspects of Skate and dials it up to 11, avoiding the arcade-inspired antics from original Tony Hawk games of the late 90s. Rather than simply pushing off and flicking an analogue stick to nail a kickflip, each analogue stick represents one of your legs.
Time has to be spent understanding weight differentials when pushing off the ground or balancing on the board. This will almost certainly lead to initial frustrations when you kiss concrete for the 15th time just trying to do a simple ollie.
Give Session time, however, the artistry of what they're trying to achieve becomes clear. Eventually hitting an ollie not only gives you an immense sense of pride but teaches you how to balance for the next trick. Though nailing moves will take you time, this sense of pleasure, and Session's perfect soundtrack makes you determined to stay on your feet.
