15 BRUTALLY Hard Video Games (That Are Actually Fun)
2. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
This wouldn't be a list of brutally hard games without including a From Software game. Though all of their titles are satisfying in their own evil ways, 2019 Game of the Year Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice takes the formula to the next level.
Sekiro is more of a focused game than the Souls games. The use of a single protagonist over a created character allows for more decisive storytelling that is easier to connect with as an audience. The limited loadout lets players hone a specific skill over simply cheesing magic or having to repeatedly learn new skill sets on future runs. The move towards more verticality and structured fights, over simply dodging and preying allows for more meticulous planning of a boss fight. This makes your eventual win feel more like an achievement of intelligence over the panicked relief of a typical Souls boss fight.
Though Sekiro is more forgiving than a traditional Souls game, it is still no slouch. Enemies will pummel you into the ground if you are not careful. What sets Sekiro apart from the rest is in how much more control you have over your life and eventual death.
