15 Greatest Late-Generation PlayStation 2 Games

3. Resident Evil 4

Shinji Mikami's game-changing masterwork just did so many things right it was hard to appreciate just how far ahead of its time it was back in 2007. But from displaying its late title card like a boss, to changing the very nature of how third-person combat was even approached - and subsequently raising a fantastically stupid debate around whether or not infected former-humans can still be classified as 'zombies' - Capcom's Resident revolution was remarkable in every way. Playing as Leon Kennedy you were sent into a small Spanish village, only for all hell to break loose - and for you to break out the shotgun. Taking on the Las Plagas was an absolute treat thanks to the over-the-shoulder aiming meaning you could systematically aim for any body part, whilst also knocking thrown projectiles out the air and roundhouse-kicking a nearby walker's head off in the process. The only downside was a remarkably ill-judged 'escort' section that saw you forced to protect one Ashley Johnson as the two of you were assaulted by all manner of creatures. Johnson was a spectacularly useless character who would end up cowering right next to a pack of enemies, making her endless high-pitched cries of "LEOON!!" universal gamer-rage fuel almost overnight, although thankfully this didn't make up the majority of the game and anything similar was never used again.
