15 Iconic Final Shots Of Beloved Video Game Characters

8. Wheatley - Portal 2

How do you top a game that was praised equally for it's ingenious mechanics, devious puzzles and insane characters? Add more mechanics, more puzzles and another insane character or two, of course. Portal 2 is potentially one of the best games of the last console generation. Not only was it deceptively difficult, but it had some of the best writing of any game in recent memory. From the script to the story, all of it was absolutely top tier and the inclusion of Stephen Merchant as the deliberately moronic core AI Wheatley was a masterstroke in game design. But it is his ending that will live on in gaming memory for the longest time. After Wheatley has betrayed you and GLADoS, he assumes control of Aperture Science and ends up essentially wrecking the place, much to GLADoS' annoyance. When you finally confront him, you are disabled, thrown to the floor and about to be killed, when a panel in the ceiling gives way and you get sight of the moon. Firing your Portal Gun at the celestial body causes both you and Weatley to be sucked into open space, only for GLaDoS to save you and consign Wheatley to an existence floating in space, with another corrupted core who is intent on screaming "SPAAAAAAACE" at the top of his digital lungs as his only company. One of the surprising parts of Wheatley's ending is that he recants. He's not really a villain, he just wanted to be important, to have a place in the world. Videogame antagonists never recant, they're always in place to be defeated, so Wheatley's dialogue is all the more unexpected and it makes the little robotic core that little bit more human. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NABJVXOgiA
