15 Iconic Final Shots Of Beloved Video Game Characters
7. Andrew Ryan - Bioshock
Most games usher you through their story with regimented events that are planned and expected. Call Of Duty is particularly guilty of this, but it's not the first game to give you linear corridors to shoot your way through. Even the most intelligent games can be guilty of this, but few actually make use of it to make a point. A little over two-third of your way into Rapture, your quest to find Andrew Ryan (the despotic leader who has been impeding your progress throughout) comes to an abrupt end, when you encounter him in his grand office. Initially a glass door forbids you access to him as he taunts you, talking about how you're a slave and a puppet even though you don't know it. Then he utters, what can only be the biggest twist in gaming in a long time; "Would You Kindly." Yes, the game actually builds in a system of indoctrination so subtle, you're unaware of it until you meet Ryan. Throughout the game, the disembodied voice of Atlas, supposedly another Rapture denizen, has guided you through treacherous situations and helped you reach Ryan and every time he gives you an instruction, he asks "would you kindly?" It's a genuine sucker punch to the player as it's such a throwaway phrase it blends in with the rest of the dialogue. Very few games ever break the fourth wall like this. Not only is it a motivator from a plot perspective, but it's a cheeky dig at the way games hold your hands, guiding you to a predefined end as quickly and simply as possible. Speak to anyone who has played Bioshock, and they will always bring up this scene as the one defining moment that stuck with them beyond the hours they played for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bncxTilQKAs
