15 Insane Call Of Duty Moments That Blew Your Mind

5. Aftermath (Modern Warfare)

By far one of the most surprising and unforgettable missions from any game of the last decade, Aftermath shows the literal fallout of Khaled Al-Asad's nuclear bomb detonation, as the player controls Sergeant Paul Jackson as he stumbles out of his downed chopper, surveys the obliterated environment for a moment and then succumbs to his injuries.

It's a shocking moment largely because it eschews the usual video game formula of completing objectives and moving forward: here you're given no choice but to watch the player character die after briefly observing his hellish final resting place.

It's again further proof of the series' initial ability to stir up emotions with its more haunting and thoughtful depiction of war's atrocities. Don't feel bad if this scene made you want to step out for a moment, because it's almost as memorably harrowing as the franchise has ever been. Almost.
