6. SOMA

Frictional Games

SOMA, Frictional Games' long awaited follow up to the horror phenomenon that was Amnesia: The Dark Descent, let a lot of fans of the series down when it released this time last year. But while the game certainly is disappointing if you're only expecting it to be another haunted house thrill ride in the same vein as the developer's previous title, judged on its own merits SOMA is one of the greatest sci-fi games in years.

Transported hundreds of years into the future after humanity has been all but wiped out and driven underwater, you're tasked to explore what's left of civilisation in the depths of the ocean in an attempt to get back home.

It's a great set-up, and while it does feature plenty of the scares you'd expect from the developers behind Amnesia, the title revels much more in high-concept science-fiction and the writings of Phillip K. Dick.

It's a touch overlong, but SOMA remains one of the richest sci-fi games from beginning to end, and any hardcore fan of the genre owes it to themselves to add this game to their download list.
