WhatCulture Gaming's own Scott Tailford has been blowing Mafia III's trumpet ever since it released last month, and yet everyone else on the internet seems to have reacted badly to 2K's latest open world masterpiece. Granted, Mafia III does have shortfalls - the repetitive structure of the missions definitely starts to grate after the ten hour mark - it's just that what it gets right more than makes up for them.
Boasting one of the best gaming narratives of the past few years, the latest entry in the underrated gangster series is home to a heartbreaking tale of racism, revenge and betrayal. The quality of the voice acting and the cutscenes alone is incredible, and the fact that the story is spun out over tens of hours makes Mafia III one of the best HBO dramas to never air on TV.
And hell, even the aspects that took the most flack in reviews aren't as bad as you might think. It's repetitive, sure, but the core combat at the heart of the game is incredibly satisfying, and the visceral, frantic gameplay is more than enough to keep you moving along to the next big plot twist.
