15 Mind-Blowing Things You Didn't Know About Resident Evil
8. Another 'Resident Evil 3.5' Became Onimusha
You may not have been all that conscious of it across the 2000s - gamers tended to just go with whatever they were given a lot more back then, before every release was greeted with the fury of a thousand burning suns - but Onimusha was another 'cast-off' from Capcom's furtive Resident Evil 3.5' sessions, originally named 'Sengoku Biohazard'.
It was said to be fairly similar to the original in terms of being set primarily in one location, but would be 'ninja-themed'; its house comprising traps and hidden doors.
Naturally, the art direction for this got very far away from "Military types shooting zombies", and not one to miss out on recouping such a lengthy R&D budget, Onimusha became the product of so many different versions of Resident Evil 3 needing to have a return on time invested, rather than a pitch laid out from the beginning.
As mentioned, many different versions of what would eventually become Resident Evil 4 were set in motion - even another isometric, side-on title still starring Leon Kennedy, but that had drastically reduced gunplay.
In the end, 'Resident Evil 3.5' spawned three wildly different titles: Devil May Cry, Onimusha, and eventually, the mighty Resident Evil 4.
