Capcom aren't ones to let a good idea to go waste, and in pursuit of creating a new horror game for the original PlayStation, they actually went back to the well to pick up a basic design framework that was already in place.

1989's Sweet Home was a NES game that is very much the progenitor to Resident Evil.
