15 Most Brutally Hard Video Game Moments Of The Decade (So Far)
10. Father Gascoigne - Bloodborne
From Souls to Bloodborne, and though the entire game's tone is more Lovecraftian than dark fantasy, this 2015 release didn't skimp on FromSoftware's love of boss battles.
One Father Gascoigne will come at you with a flurry of animations in seconds, being one of the first genuinely hard fights you have to surmount. Where the Cleric Beast was a standard "oversized enemy" duel that allowed you to dart between its legs for an easy win, matching blow for blow against a human-sized foe makes for a far faster, more intense duel.
Also worth noting is that Goscoigne represents the growing insanity inside Yarnham, taking hold of his once-good soul. You can feel it in his every action - he really does leap across the courtyard to claw and swipe at you. Brilliantly, you can find a discarded Music Box from his daughter that will aid you in the battle - though this comes with knowing that the good Father has completely lost his humanity, being reduced to a feral beast, only hungry for your flesh.
Best put him down...
