Before Overwatch, before Team Fortress 2, colourful, sublimely animated shooters were known through only one franchise - Timesplitters. Free Radical's perfect blend of animation, light physics and local co-op skirmishes made for the best home console shooting experience since GoldenEye.

In fact, for those who never had an N64, I'd posit Timesplitters was your GoldenEye.

For the second instalment in particular, the developers used their time-travelling setup to really have fun with the various level setups. You've got arctic bases, spy-themed mansion infiltrations, zombie survival - it was a really impressive, meaty package, and whilst the first and third entries are just as fun, everything about the Timesplitters series peaked in this immaculate second instalment.
