This was the first time many of us heard Charles Martinet's Mario voice in a video game (unless you played the bizarre Mario's Game Gallery for the PC). Hearing it teased the possibilities of the N64, ushering in a new era of properly vocalised Nintendo protagonists (though with its limited sound capabilities, the N64 proved not to be the best console to do that with).
