4. Hatoful Boyfriend
So you're an anime human girl who gets sent to a school where everyone else is a pigeon. Naturally you make friends with your other classmates as best you can despite obvious differences. You come to find that pigeons are actually quite enjoyable to be around and you've become so lonely since leaving your school for humans. You need to find somebody to love. So you start dating pigeons. The before stated paragraph is just my way of trying to identify with the protagonist in this game. The actuality is that this entire game is only about dating pigeons. Upon first encountering a new bird at school you have the choice to see their anime guy form, but after that one chance they only appear in pigeon form. However, they talk and flirt with you like real boys in school would do. To me, the whole thing sounds like it's for the birds. Okay, just kidding, that was a horrible line, I know, but whom does this game actually appeal to? American gaming critics gave their thumbs up to Hatoful Boyfriend for being the most bizarre visual novel they've ever experienced. That's praise of a certain kind, however this game is meant as a dating sim for girls to meet male birds. That's so weird and ridiculous that it comes as no surprise that Hatoful Boyfriend was never meant to be released outside of Japan. Except that American audiences heard of it and then wanted to play too because it was weird and ridiculous.
