With Belmont’s Curse on its way this year, it’s the first time that Castlevania fans have had something to be excited about for a long time. With 18 years since the last mainline entry, that gap has had to be filled by other, similar titles. Enter Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the 2019 crowd-funded Metroidvania from legendary developer duo Koji Igarashi and Shutaro Ida.

With Ida’s unfortunate passing earlier this year, there’s a bittersweetness to its sequel, The Scarlet Engagement, being the last game he directed, finished in his stead by Iga.

Whilst the first game was no slouch, this continuation looks to blow it out of the water graphically, with gorgeously detailed locations and some impressive FMV cutscenes. From a gameplay perspective, Igarashi is still the master of the genre and we can be certain that Scarlet Engagement will offer another brilliant world to explore.

This time, that exploration is helmed by two characters, both simultaneously controlled by the player, used in tandem to defeat foes and evade traps.

The game promises more customisation in terms of combat as well as cosmetically, a day and night cycle, and a much deeper story than before. And, being a prequel, 505 Games and ArtPlay insist that if you missed the first game you can simply jump in here.

Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement will release sometime in 2026.
