In short, Insomniac's foray into the arachnid-based superhero was nothing short of spectacular. The studio spent as much time delivering the fantasy Spider-Man experience as they did delving into the relationships and life of the man behind the mask.

Yet, no moment matches when these two aspects of Insomniac's game collide, Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus coming to blows in an epic final battle. Both fighting with everything they have, their showdown is powerful, explosive and ultimately tragic, Octavius revealing he'd known Peter was Spider-Man all along and will destroy his protegee if it means getting the revenge he's sought for years.

After an emotion-fuelled battle down the side of Oscorp tower, Peter Parker manages to finally dispatch his crazed mentor, disabling his mechanical tentacles and leaving him trapped atop the motionless arms he created. It's a shocking gut-punch of a moment; one that's as epic in scale and spectacle as it is rich in compelling storytelling.

In the end, this battle proves Insomniac's newest title isn't just a stand-out Spider-Man game. It's a stand-out Spider-Man story as well.
