2. Silent Hill 2

Every good horror enthusiast knows if you want to take any location and turn it straight into something nightmarish, you just add layers and layers of misty fog. The beautiful thing is that when Konami first created what would become known as one of the defining entries in the genre, they had to add the fog to cover up the technical limitations of the older Playstation hardware. Come SH2 it'd become a signature trait, leaving them to focus more on delivering one hell of a story alongside the horror - which to this day different fans have their own theories as to what the final few chapters really mean. Many games take influence from the Silent Hill series, but the likes of the freakishly mutilated Pyramid Head or the twisted nurses that amble towards you in fits and bursts never lose their disturbing and macabre edge.
