1. Why Mario Wears Overalls
Due to the graphical/hardware restraints of 1980s game design, characters were designed with only a handful of pixels each. In one of the legendary "Iwata Asks" segments on Nintendo's own site, he discussed with Shigeru Miyamoto what this meant in terms of designing a character that looked more human than the standard 'stickmen' aesthetic from the West. Miyamoto noted that everything was done out of necessity. Mario's moustache doubled as his mouth, his hat got around animating hair, he would wear white gloves to establish arm movements - and to make his running easier to see in the three frames of animation they had, he wore coloured overalls to differentiate his body from his limbs.
