Although everyone attributes motion tech to Nintendo following the overwhelming success of the Wii, it was actually designed by pilot Tom Quinn. Quinn recognised the common problem he was having in translating real-world movement to accurate computer output in-flight, and essentially created 'Gyration' (later leading to the screen-flipping gyroscopes you have in your phone). However, when it didn't catch on in his respective field, he got in touch with both Microsoft and Sony across the early 2000s, to create something for the future of gaming; to which they both declined. It was then during a meeting with Nintendo that Chairman Atsushi Asada jumped at the idea for such a unique direction, trying various implementations of gyroscope technology until the Wii nailed it in 2006.
