14. Velocity 2X
What It's About: A sci-fi shoot 'em up sequel to 2012's Velocity, 2X is a side-scrolling shooter which divides its gameplay between ship-based warfare and on-foot blasting, with a gorgeous cel-shaded style to boot. Why You Need To Play It: Though players can take or leave the plot, this is a beautifully designed game which boasts some of the most frantic gameplay of its kind in years and years. The adrenaline-infused rush of racing through a level in record time is glorious, and while the game's infinite lives essentially make it a whole lot easier than its forebears, it'll still take most players a good 7 or 8 hours to make it through the vast array of increasingly insane stages. Artful, absurdly satisfying and perfectly old school, Velocity 2X is an instant indie classic.
