10. Tainted Love

Wouldn't Batman's life be so much easier if he just offed the Joker once and for all? It's a question the Clown Prince Of Crime ponders as he lays strapped to a bed within Blackgate Prison, and as the Joker contemplates the nature of fate, he comes to believe that he and the Caped Crusader are inextricably bound from this night forward.

As Dr. Harleen Quinzel listens on, the Joker shares his newfound belief that he's finally found a kindred spirit, someone who can see life through his eyes and laugh at how absurd it all is. They're cut from the same cloth, he tells Dr. Quinzel, why deny it at this point? Life is harsh, and sometimes all it takes is one bad day to rob someone of their sanity, their very reason for existing - but doesn't mean the opposite is also true?

Isn't it possible that things don't truly come into focus until you meet someone who gives you a clearer view of the big picture? He's met someone special, the Joker says. And, as he stares deeply into Harleen Quinzel's eyes, he promises his undying friendship.

In one masterful scene, WB Montreal established the twisted dynamic that would define the Batman/Joker/Harley relationship. It's so incredibly easy to sympathise with Harley's belief that the Joker's feelings regarding Batman reflect his adoration for her that's it's almost sickening.

Like an abused lover, Harley's going to trust in the Joker's 'love' for her, even if it means lying to herself to spare the pain of loneliness.
