4. Meeting Hugo Strange

Wasting no time throwing us into the fray, Arkham City opens as Bruce Wayne is abducted from a press conference and thrown behind the walls of the titular Arkham City.

As Bruce Wayne sits in a pitch-black room, Hugo Strange leers into frame and addresses the playboy billionaire as his nocturnal alter-ego.

The man positively oozes malice, and his comments regarding the Dark Knight's role in 'Protocol 10' suggest that he's been planning an attack of this scale for quite some time. Just what the hell's going on here? It's only as we progress further into the night that we get an insight into just how far the good doctor's tentacles reach - having learned of Quincy Sharp's mayoral aspirations, Hugo Strange promised to aid the former Arkham warden's campaign in exchange for unlimited access to the asylum's patients.

And it's through his interactions with the inmates of the asylum that Hugo Strange developed an obsession with the Dark Knight. After learning that Batman was responsible for capturing the majority of the prison's inmates, Strange became convinced that the Dark Knight's crusade is ultimately responsible for escalating criminal activity in Gotham City.

It's not enough to simply kill the Batman though, and Strange would spend years developing 'Protocol Ten'. So does Strange have a point? Would Gotham be better off without the Batman's 'help'?

There's no easy answer, but the issue of causality formed the backbone of Arkham City's narrative, and elevated Hugo Strange's crusade beyond the usual 'evil for evil's sake'-type motivation.
