18 Best Video Game Moments Of 2016

13. Finding Your First School Of Fish - Abzû

There are games that look pretty, there are games that look like the photo-realistic Uncharted 4 - and then there are games that feel like interactive paintings, which is where Abzû makes its claim for one of the finest visual experiences of the year.

A highly conceptual game masterminded by the art director on 2012's Journey, Matt Nava, he reportedly wanted to create a game that was "full of life" in direct contrast to the barren deserts and solo adventuring of that game. As such, at any given time in Abzû, you're swimming amongst hundreds of individually-modelled fish, stroking a sea turtle as it floats on past, grabbing a dolphin and hanging on as it breaks out the surface for the occasional flip - or in this case, getting engulfed in a downright stunning whirlpool of fish.

You've really not felt the power of what Nava has conceptualised until its in motion, and with Abzû roughly translating to "ocean of wisdom", there's a lot to be learned from taking a trip to space out amongst the waves.
