13. Daydreaming In The Cannery - What Remains Of Edith Finch
The followup from developers Giant Sparrow (who previously gave you The Unfinished Swan), What Remains of Edith Finch sees the titular character investigate the history of her own family, attempting to figure out if her bloodline is cursed and if she herself, is also doomed.
This manifests in-game as narrated stories that inspire a variety of vignettes, sometimes letting you control animals and other characters, but one of the most impressive is a "daydreaming" sequence where you play as Lewis Finch. Lewis simply isn't content at his job, and being a bit of a loner he begins daydreaming - slowly amassing an entire kingdom of other lives that grant him the importance he lacks in real life.
Brilliantly, you actually have to control both his job, slicing off the heads of fish, and the dream world, navigating a series of dungeons, sailing on a boat and finally being welcomed by rapturous applause from a fake kingdom.
What this means for Lewis as a character is pretty tragic, but as a game sequence, no other developer has ever successfully portrayed what it's like to mundanely do your everyday work, whilst also daydreaming.
Genius.
