If we're talking about the cream of third-party crop, you need look no further than MGS V. Sure it's barmier than a bag of pheasants singing The Sound of Silence, but it plays like a dream.

From the veritable mix of responsive stealth and action approaches you can deploy, sidekicks that change missions on the fly, weapons and items that are brilliantly sci-fi influenced and the essence of replayability that comes from all these things combined, Phantom Pain is like a pure shot of adrenaline you can trigger for tens of hours at a time.

When I'd finally clocked the story and all the side missions, I was sitting on an hour count of 300, and not one second of that felt wasted or aimless. Kojima's final Metal Gear is a masterpiece - it's just a shame about that ending.
