18 Greatest Role-Playing Games Of The Decade (So Far)

9. Fire Emblem: Fates

Last of the turn-based RPGs on this list, but Fire Emblem: Fates really is the most impressive of the bunch yet.

Comprising two main campaigns and a third sizeable DLC pack add-on for the finale, you play a mind-wiped Prince or Princess who finds themselves being told they belong to two warring factions. Which game you pick up (Birthright or Conquest) will determine how the story goes, as well as which characters pop up and the general feel of difficulty throughout.

The Fire Emblem series has always revelled in being one gigantic Saturday morning cartoon filled with character-gasping betrayals and "I was your brother all along!"-type revelations, and honestly, when you pair that with the best turn-based action this side of XCOM, it's one of the most perfect pairings of narrative and game design you can play.
