Many western Super Smash Bros. fans consider the fighting sound effects of the series to be iconic. With that said, you'll be surprised to know that they weren't originally designed to sound that way. In reality, the punching sound effects for the US and Japanese versions of the first Super Smash Bros. were very different.

The Japanese version features more realistic and generic punching soundbites, which were removed and replaced by more fantastical sounds for the US version. It's not known why exactly this change as made, though it is widely believed it was done in an effort to make the game seem less violent.
