Considering how successful the Super Smash Bros. franchise has become, you'll be forgiven for finding it unbelievable that Nintendo actually didnt have much faith that the original would be a massive hit, but it's true. The company didn't think their characters were particularly well known outside of Japan, and therefore saw no reason to release it anywhere else.
To Nintendo's delighted surprise, it turned out that they severely underestimated the popularity of their characters, and once they saw how well it was selling on their home turf, they quickly released it in North America and eventually the rest of the world.
