2. Syndicate

As far as high-tech futuristic first-person-shooters go, the most recently recognisable is Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and even that had a protagonist whose voice sounded like he was gargling razor blades. Syndicate on the other hand was the second post-Riddick creation from the incredibly talented Starbreeze Studios, who also brought us the first in The Darkness series. Once again as with those games, graphic fidelity was through the roof, with animations segueing effortlessly into each other as you moved through the environment, moving dynamically from cover to cover, and hacking the brains of the many oppositional forces youll come across. Oh did I not mention? Brain-hacking. Its the future, or the present in Syndicates case. The game takes place in a reality where weve all had datachips implanted in our brains for the sake of access to an all-knowing dataverse, however due to your access to such a thing, convincing enemy soldiers to blow their own brains out, or assist you in blowing out someone elses, is a core part of the game. Whilst the story isnt in itself particularly amazing, and you dont need a brain implant to see one of the twists coming a mile off, the world of Syndicate is an incredibly memorable one, especially when youre doing battle in a subway station with another Matrixian ninja-man, to the pulsating sounds of Skrillex roaring away all around. Sublime.
