20 Announced Video Games That Are NEVER Coming Out
10. System Shock 3
Originally led by veteran game designer Warren Spector, the third installment of the System Shock series had a lot of promise, but a development cycle plagued with difficulties has meant the game has been stuck in limbo.
Announced in 2015 by OtherSide Entertainment, the game was set to offer a riveting dose of immersive sim and with Spector coming on board to lead the project, things looked to be on the up. The development team worked on the project for two years and made significant progress, including a teaser and a pre-alpha gameplay trailer. That is when the dark clouds of financial struggle gathered. The game’s publisher, Starbreeze went into bankruptcy and killed the project from their end.
In 2020, with OtherSide’s situation not improving and the company having to layoff much of the team working on the game, the rights for the project were transferred to Tencent. Since then however, we are yet to receive any further updates on the game. Tencent have remained tight-lipped and while that doesn’t necessarily suggest a cancellation, it also doesn’t offer much hope.
One possible light at the end of the tunnel could however appear courtesy of Nightdive Studios. The people behind the original System Shock games and the 2023 remake of the first one, have confirmed they are interested in acquiring System Shock 3 and bringing its vision to life, but that the situation remains quite complicated with Tencent. Will we ever get this game? Only time can tell.
