20 Announced Video Games That Are NEVER Coming Out
9. Deep Down
A classic case of a promising game getting increasingly straddled by expanding scope and eventually entering development purgatory. This dungeon crawler by Capcom was announced in 2014, coinciding with the unveiling of the Playstation 4. Set in the far-future of New York city, the game is built around an intriguing story of the player getting transported back in time by touching magical artefacts.
With its procedurally generated dungeon settings infused with dungeons and dragons themes, a multiplayer gameplay, and gripping story of uncovering ancient connections to the protagonist’s present, the game offered a fair degree of promise. Unfortunately that is pretty much all that it offered.
The originally planned 2024 release became impossible in the face of the game’s expanded scope. Five years later in 2019, the producer of the game Yoshinori Ono reassured it was not cancelled, but simply pushed back due to disbandment of the team originally assigned to its development. In 2020, a report by Video Games Chronicle mentioned that while the game was in fact in a near-complete state, there was no planned release.
The fact it has not been officially cancelled gives some hope. Considering all of the above however it does seem unlikely that Capcom will get around to releasing Deep Down anytime soon.
