8. 'Like A Movie Hero Or Something...' - MGS
Moments before fighting Liquid Snake in the Hind D, Solid and Otacon have a moment in the communications tower. Snake needs to get to the snowfield to reach Metal Gear Rex, and the lift is out of action. Otacon is there to act as engineer, but also comments on Snake’s bravery for going off to fight the helicopter, ‘you’re incredible. Like a movie hero or something…’
Snake looks down and corrects Otacon as the game’s beautiful intro track, ‘The Best Is Yet To Come,’ plays. ‘In the movie, the hero always saves the girl.’ Depending on which ending you get, this acts as foreshadowing for Meryl’s eventual death.
This encounter inspires Otacon to ask if ‘love can bloom on the battlefield,’ and also serves as a gut-wrenching ironic moment just minutes before Otacon’s love, Sniper Wolf, dies at the hands of Snake.
