20 Best Cutscenes In The Metal Gear Solid Franchise
14. 'Is She The One They Call Fortune?’ - MGS2
While still getting to grips with controlling Raiden in the main part of Metal Gear Solid 2, players are treated to a significant introduction of two antagonists. While making his way to the President, Raiden witnesses the seemingly supernatural spectacle of Fortune.
While Harry Gregson Williams’ sorrowful saxophone solo cries out, bullets from the Navy SEALS rip through the air missing their intended target. Bemused, Raiden gasps, ‘what the hell is that?’ Panicking over ‘a DUD!,’ the SEALS confirm to the players that this is Fortune, a powerful solider with the gift of never being able to be hit.
As the cutscene plays out, it is revealed Fortune considers her special ability more of a curse as she mourns the death of seagulls with an envious pity.
While this scene is comical in its overacting by the Navy SEALS, it masterfully introduces the ambivalence behind Fortune’s motivations - much like that of Sniper Wolf’s. Interestingly, Kojima decided to introduce the character with an unrealisable desire for death, as opposed to revealing it in her demise.
