6. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Mario has a long legacy of RPG's which is a bit weird for a character who usually stars in games where the story is that the princess has been kidnapped - go rescue her.

The majority of these RPG's have charming worlds, loveable characters and fun stories, for example, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga you play as Mario and Luigi and journey through the Beanbean Kingdom to defeat the evil Cackletta and Fawful.

Although she has the most egregious difficulty spike ever with her boss fight, Cackletta is actually a really fun villain even if she doesn't reach the majesty that is Fawful, a crazy character who is the most notable original character from the entire Mario & Luigi series by far. If any character from a Mario RPG is going to get into Smash it should be Fawful, not Geno.

Alongside the charming story and characters is a basic yet compelling turn-based combat system where you must time your button presses to your attacks to maximise the damage. This simple yet interesting system alongside how great everything else is makes Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga work really well as an introduction to the JRPG genre.
