Speaking of legendary twist, Bioshock has one of the best of the bunch.

When a man named Jack survives a mysterious plane crash in the middle of the ocean, he finds himself transported via lighthouse elevator to an underwater Randian nightmare city called Rapture. A city that seems like it already wouldn't have been the best place to live for multiple reasons, even if it wasn't in the process of burning to the goddamn ground.

Jack must traverse this living nightmare of a city, while along the way learning that his coming here might not have been the astronomically bad luck he thinks it was.

The story takes you through all of Rapture, doing battle with the horrors around every corner, and being constantly confronted with the choice to either save what good remains, or take it all for yourself. Games with moral choice systems often get bogged down in the infinite possibilities of their premise, but Bioshock keeps the choices simple enough to close any moral loopholes, but also poignant enough to be meaningful.
