20 Best Video Game Stories Ever
9. Metal Gear Solid 4
The hardest part of putting a Metal Gear Solid game on this list is picking just one to place over all of the others. Metal Gear games practically revolutionized what it means to be a story heavy experience in gaming, and they've been keeping up that trend since the 80s, so which one wins out over the others?
So while I could have chosen true violence and picked Metal Gear: Survive just to watch the world burn, I instead decided on the true ending of the series - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots.
MGS 4 may require a lot of backstory from the previous games in order to really know the intricate details of what's going on, but it always remembers to tell a good story that mostly stands on its own. The lore details make the game better, but they're not vital. And if you have played the previous games, this game's ending will have you weeping like a baby all the way to the end credits.
The cutscenes may be long as hell but you'll barely notice as MGS 4's story of war, PSTD, intergenerational trauma, and how one lives with dignity keeps you glued to the screen the whole way through.
