Despite the 'Witcher vs Fallout vs Metal Gear' theme of 2015's end of year lists, it's Her Story that might still prove to be the most controversial. Casting you as a no-named user of a police computer, you're tasked with thumbing through a great many clips of a mysterious woman in front of you, who's on trial for murder. She repeatedly professes her innocence, and that's where you come in. See, the computer system you're using (it's set in the 90s) tracks all words that were said, so once you've watched the first few pieces of footage, typing in 'murder', 'knife', 'innocent' etc. will get you varying degrees of extra information. Due to the hard-boiled detective setup of just working your way through this whole case, you'll start writing down your own theories, compiling what dates match up with what, seeing what parts of her story have holes in them, and which most definitely don't. It ends up putting you in a role by power of suggestion alone, and whilst the tale actress Viva Seifert tells is reward enough in itself, once you figure out who you are and how this tale could only be told through video games - that's what excels Her Story into the upper echelons of true brilliance.
